Steve Balbi has been in the Australian music scene for over 30 years and has worked with some of the big names in music – David Bowie, Tom Jones, Michael Hutchence & Jenny Morris alike. It's no wonder, the former Noiseworks bass guitarist, has such a brilliant take on music.
With his new album “Black Rainbow”, he has produced one of the landmark albums of recent times, a sound that gives your ears the pleasure of experiencing what the big guns of the 70s, 80 could never provide and a sound that the current crop of artists could never deliver. A fusion. A fusion of the quality classic music of “those” days and the punchy, crisp and sharp clear tones that only the current technology can generate. This album is a modern take on what musicians aim to produce but can only be pulled off by the true masters. I might have said a bit here but trust me when I say this, it’s a sort of feeling that you have to experience. Just try un-smiling while you listen to him. You will fail and will probably smile again upon realizing your foolishness.
It’s a complete album with damn good songs from start to finish. The first song “Why did it take so long” starts with a punchy guitar rhythm and straight away takes you to his world. From then on, you are grabbed tight into Steve’s world – the tune changes, the mood varies but his amazing voice and the music takes you away, to a different world that you’ve longed to be. His lyrics are simple yet powerful and some of them stick with you.
My top 3 personal favorites are “From Love to Dust”, “I found you” and the heart-grabbing “Moving on”. These are the gems of songs that easily separate good songs from great and will remain with you permanently.
If you were thinking of getting one album this year, “Black Rainbow” from Steve Balbi could easily be it.
