Thanks to Suzanne Bunker for the following review… In the 70’s I danced with friends to our vinyl recordings of ABBA. Today in 2010, thanks to advanced technology, I danced on stage with ABBA!! Dancing on stage with ABBA holograms is just one of the fun interactive activities you can do as you travel through ABBA World, the official interactive exhibition that is currently showing in Melbourne. The journey begins in the 60’s with an introduction to how Anni-Frid, Agnetha, Bjorn and Benny’s music careers began. Did you know Anni-Frid (Frida) was a cabaret singer? This is followed by a short movie by critically acclaimed film director Jonas Akerlund following the career of ABBA. Then the fun begins! On this amazing two hour journey you will be photographed on an ABBA album cover, you will pose with the Arrival helicopter which, up until the day before I took the journey, you could actually sit in but that was stopped due to a child falling out. You can remix an ABBA song, sing along with ABBA, be part of a film clip, test your ABBA knowledge in quizzes and the best interactive opportunity of all, dance with ABBA on stage. Ok so it wasn’t actually ABBA but dancing with holograms is a long way from dancing along to the film clip on Countdown! All these activities are included in the price of your ticket; the only catch is you can only do each activity once. So there is no dress rehearsal for the singing and dancing and you need to choose your song and album covers carefully as there are no second takes. Amongst the twenty five exhibits are album covers, videos, a mock up of the Polar recording studio and a typical backstage setting. All the exhibits are backed with an audio recording that you listen to at your own pace, controlled by the portable device and headphones you collect on the way in. By far the best exhibit is towards the end of the exhibition. The costumes, including the body hugging white pant suit worn by Agnetha, the famous cat suit and the glittering green cape. The costumes, along with many more items in the exhibition are original ABBA items! ABBA world is a great exhibition taking you back to the 70’s but enabling you to be a popstar thanks to 21st century technology. The journey finishes at home when you download the video of your dancing, photo, sound mix and quiz results from ABBAworld.com So if you are in Melbourne before October 31st, put aside two hours of your day to take this journey through pop history. .
