The Who fans got a fix of the utmost proportions with 50 years of outstanding music being covered in one night!
The band, lead by the talented trio of Ciaran Gribbin (INXS, Joe Echo), Steve Balbi (Noiseworks, Mi-Sex) and Simon Meli (The Widowbirds) were amazing in how they delivered a somewhat eclectic back catalogue of music from English rockers “The Who".
The three artists took turns delivering the massive hits, adding their own style to the performance and they didn’t disappoint as the crowd got into the music from the 60’s.
Starting with “Substitute", it was literally a hit machine of songs like "You Better, You Better, You Bet”, "See Me/Feel Me” and "Baba O'Riley". From the early songs that seemed simple in arrangement like “Pictures of Lily” to the later years of more heavier, more fuller sounding “Wont get Fooled Again”, they were all performed with energy and passion, enabling us to enjoy the musical evolution that is “The Who”. The drums for "Won't Get Fooled Again" were played by special guest, Jagger Alexander-Erber, a 13 year old who really knows how hit the skins! He was brilliant and has a very big future ahead of him.
The songs were not played in a chronological order and this added to the night. You could hear an early hit like “I can see for miles” followed up by “Pinball Wizard" from the musical “Tommy”.
There were also songs from the movie “Quadraphenia” which was based on “The Who” album of 1973 and featured "5.15” and “Love, Reign O’er me".
To finish up the night, all three took to the stage and performed “Magic Bus” which was followed by what has now become the CSI song “Who are you?”. The energy on stage had clearly rubbed off on those who were up dancing and begging for more. Time really did fly!
It truly was a great night, with fantastic music and gritty performances but it also begs the question of the last song of the night, “Who are You”?
