The first LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS series concert in Ballarat in October was a blast as Aussie music lovers flocked to Lake Wendouree Fairyland Reserve for a solid line-up of the country’s best performers.
Carrying on from the success of the first LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS concert for 2013, a second LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS concert has just been announced for December this year, this time featuring the talents of Vika & Linda, Mental As Anything, The Black Sorrows and James Reyne.
The LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS concert series will take advantage of the beautiful summer weather in breathtaking lakeside settings around regional Victoria, bringing together enviable line-ups of the country’s finest performers. The LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS concept is the brain child of promoter Duane McDonald, who is responsible for the annual Red Hot Summer Tour which travels the East Coast every summer, and the new One Electric Day event to be held annually in Werribee.
Duane is looking forward to building the LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS concept into a massive regional touring event every year. With the view to spread its wings to other regional areas in Victoria over the next few years, the LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS concerts represent a rare opportunity for music lovers to see an incredible bill of musicians performing in their own towns. “It’s important that people living in regional areas get the same opportunities to see great concerts as those living in the metropolitan centres,” says Duane. “The feedback we’ve received since starting the LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS concept last year is that people would like to see it expand to other regional areas within Victoria and beyond. We’re already looking at other venues to bring LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS to in the future and look forward to this event becoming a permanent highlight on the Victorian musical calendar.”
The December concert marks the return of Vika & Linda Bull who were part of the first ever LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS gig last year. The sisters are well-known for their gorgeous voices and stunning vocal harmonies. From performing with The Black Sorrows in the 1980s, to their own diverse solo and duo paths in soul, gospel, blues and country, the sisters have released eight albums and performed with countless fellow musicians, such as John Butler, Kasey Chambers and John Farnham to name a few. Their time performing with The Black Sorrows saw three triple-platinum albums Hold Onto Me, Harley and Rose and Better Times featuring the sisters’ vocals. Their duo material was moving and featured incredible harmonies that few artists can match. The sisters on stage performances are captivating and unforgettable.
Mental As Anything also join this exciting bill. As a band, the ‘Mentals’ as they are fondly known, have an infamous back-story. Its members were all fellow art students who apparently started a band in order to ‘con the local publican into giving them a gig in exchange for free beer’. The con worked and more than three decades later, Mental As Anything are considered one of the most well-loved bands in Australia. Their ‘highly listenable, idiosyncratic brand of garage pop’ won them fans from all walks of life, with hits like The Nips Are Getting Bigger, If You Leave Me Can I Come To, Too Many Times and Live It Up fast becoming part of the Australian psyche. The band members never forgot their artistic backgrounds either, staging ‘Mental As Anything Art Exhibitions’ featuring work from all of the members with some members departing music to focus full-time on their art careers, which in turn were incredibly successful. A live performance by this band is always a memorable one – so get on your dancing shoes.
Another icon of Australian music, Joe Camilleri, will be bringing his legendary band The Black Sorrows to LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS. An incredible songwriter, Joe penned some unforgettable hits with The Black Sorrows, from tracks like Harley & Rose, Dear Children, The Chosen Ones, Never Let Me Go and Chained to the Wheel to Hold On To Me and New Craze, any live show is guaranteed to get audiences on their feet dancing. After the success of his first band Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons, Joe pulled together a group of musicians and launced The Black Sorrows. Since then, the band have sold more than a million albums world-wide, toured Europe (to sell-out shows) and won an ARIA for Best Band. Over the past decades, the line-up of The Black Sorrows has been ‘elastic’ and has been home to about 40 musicians, all who have hung their hats on Joe’s beloved songs. Joe Camilleri also has an established solo career.
James Reyne needs no introduction to Aussie audiences. From his time fronting the legendary Australian Crawl through to his successful solo career, James’ music is part of Australian history. As a prolific songwriter and strong vocalist, it’s no surprise that James has won accolade after accolade for his contribution to music. All of Australian Crawl’s albums earned Top 5 status in the charts, winning band, music and video awards, while James himself scored Best Male Vocalist gongs. With songs like Reckless, Australian Crawl is part of Aussie music history. When the band split in the mid-1980s, James embarked on a solo career. His debut self-titled solo album went triple platinum and included three Top 10 singles. Since then, he hasn’t looked back, or stopped producing great music.
The LAKESIDE TWILIGHTS concert series is a rare opportunity to see some of the best Australian artists on the touring circuit today together on the one line-up. Tickets on sale now.
