Joshua James is bringing his nouveau brand of folk to Australia as special guest on Neil Finn’s national tour this March, performing extended sets at headline shows in Melbourne at the Shebeen on Friday 14 March, Cronulla, Brass Monkey on Friday 21 March and Sydney, The Vanguard on Sunday 23 March. Tickets for all shows go on sale Thursday 13 February.
Raised in hard-bitten Nebraska, Joshua’s sound is a product of his surrounds. Having traversed the heart of America’s mid-west and settled among the mountains of Utah, his connection to his homelands is reflected in his music as a distinctly American ache. Maneuvering from a husky whisper to full-bodied roar, Joshua’s songs are devastating in their honesty and heartbreaking in their melancholy themes.
“Sentimentality is a key component of his music – songs about kidnappings, the difficulty of communication to distant relatives, substance abuse and other of difficult life challenges feature in his songs, making him comparable to folk legends Bob Dylan or Neil Young.” The Upcoming, 2012
“To temper the melancholy, [Joshua James] offers sentimentality, in the syrupy 1950s romance that oozes across waltzing piano of ‘Surrender’ and the title track’s country chords. Now and again James startles you with a different sound, something more reminiscent of Elliott Smith.” The Guardian, 2012
Joshua James’ first two albums, 2007’s The Sun Is Always Brighter and 2009’s Build Me This, both topped the year end ‘Best of iTunes’ list. His latest album From The Top of Willamette Mountain, released at the end of 2012, was met with widespread critical acclaim and peaked at number 30 on the US Billboard Charts. His work has been showcased through a variety of media, including making it onto the soundtrack for US TV shows Sons of Anarchy and Pretty Little Liars.
Joshua James will be supported in Melbourne and Sydney by special guest LAKYN, the 21-year-old Melbourne singer/songwriter who stole the spotlight during the first season of The Voice (Australia). LAKYN recently released his debut EP Better Than This to critical acclaim, showcasing his evocative acoustic style. In Cronulla, Joshua will be joined by special guest Dylan Wright, Sydney based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has been likened to Jack Johnson, Matt Corby and even Tracy Chapman.
