IT’S ONLY ROCK ‘N’ ROLL – THE ROCKUMENTARY
AN AUTHENTIC MUSICAL SNAP-SHOT BEHIND ONE OF THE GREATEST
ROCK ‘N’ ROLL BANDS IN THE WORLD – THE ROLLING STONES
PERFORMED BY THE AUSTRALIAN ROLLING STONES SHOW
“….[radio static]… We’d like to interrupt this broadcast to announce that Brian Jones, former member of The Rolling Stones, has been found dead in the pool of his Sussex home. While the death is believed to be accidental, there’s been no comment from the band…”
A new musical experience has hit the road throughout Australia – It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll is more than just a rock show, it’s a ‘rockumentary’ behind one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands in the world, The Rolling Stones. This authentic musical snap-shot gives audiences a glimpse into a time when The Stones reigned, telling their story through their music.
Performed by the highly acclaimed Australian Rolling Stones Show, this is a once in a lifetime chance to experience a documentary, live-in-concert. Everything about this show puts its audience right in the heart of the storyline, sharing the highs and lows of one of the world’s revered rock bands, while also putting on a damn good rock show. If you love The Rolling Stones, or just love rock, there is something for everyone in this unique ‘rockumentary’.
The brainchild of promoter Andrew Malouf and Producer Wayne Smith, who pulled together masses of material and songs which eventually honed the show into a theatrical rockumentary. “The Stones have produced some of the most legendary music of our time with over 200 million albums sold,” says Wayne, who also plays lead / rhythm guitar in the show. “They’ve performed thousands of shows and are unparalleled in terms of success and fame, so the material we had to draw upon was almost inexhaustible. We are talking about a 50 year non-stop phenomenon condensed into songs and stories that create two-hours of fun and enjoyment… that’s why we say it’s a snap-shot in time.”
The show is performed live musically with added narrative and props to back drop the “Rockumentary” as necessary. The show has all the energy that any Stones fan would expect from a concert experience in the spirit of the 60s and 70s by rockin’ out to tracks such as Paint It Black, Get Off My Cloud, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Woman, Brown Sugar, Angie and Satisfaction to name a few.
Even the stage set was designed to have a ‘larger than life’ feel with a backdrop of the band’s iconic Fender amplifiers and an army of digital moving lights. For those who have been there, the set design really embodies the feel of a 1970s touring rock band.
It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll’s live concert experience is all about interacting with the audience. The show is no different to being at any rock concert, its pumping, loud and sweaty – everything a good rock show should be. Wayne says they were always keen to make the audience feel part of the show, and have even included a section for local choirs to sometimes be part of the incredible rockumentary.
It was during the writing process that Andrew came up with the idea of inviting local choirs to sing the choir part of the iconic song You Can’t Always Get What You Want. “Schools have enthusiastically agreed to jump on board with us,” Wayne says. “We knew then we had something special to work with and that song is now the showcase number which opens the second act.” It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll will be continuing to offer this opportunity to choirs on their forthcoming regional run.
When it came to writing and preparing the show, Wayne says it was essential that they were as accurate as possible in their representation of the time. “It’s the simplicity of the Stones music that’s the hardest to replicate,” he says. “As a musician, the tendency is always to over play to compensate what one can’t do all that well. With the Stones music, it’s always the case that less is more in a musical sense. When you delve musically into the songs its only then that you realise and understand the complexity that is their trademark.”
Keeping all that in mind, Wayne says the bands focus is ensuring that when they presented the Stones music in a live sense, they achieve the tick of approval from even the purest of Stones’ fans. “It had to be authentic,” he says. “It needed to be adaptable to the many different venues that the show will tour, but visually, it’s what rock ‘n’ roll is all about. It’s just a really cool show to put on.”
And from all reports, they’ve hit the nail on the head, the show has already earned some incredible reviews and industry nods. “The show is finding an audience in all ages as The Stones have touched several generations and are still finding an audience today,” says Wayne. “Some nights, as a performer, you connect with the songs in a different way but always we end up with people on their feet and dancing… that never fails us at any show.”
It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll certainly pays homage to The Rolling Stones in rockin’ style. The members of The Australian Rolling Stones Show are all accomplished musicians who have a true passion for music.
It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll – the ‘rockumnetary’ – is touring Australia now.
