FIRST ARIA AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

PARKWAY DRIVE, DJAN DJAN AND SOUND RELIEF TAKE OUT FIRST GENRE AWARDS!

With the 2010 ARIA Awards less than one week away, event organisers are proud to kick start an exciting week of festivities which begins with a unique 5 night stand at Bennelong Lawn in Sydney’s Royal Botanical Gardens to reveal the winners of the ARIA Awards in sixteen genre categories and ends with the main event on Sunday 7 November at the Sydney Opera House.

Breaking with tradition, for the first time sixteen ARIA Award “genre” categories will be presented outside of the usual Awards framework. In a unique roll out to build anticipation, these ‘Genre’ Awards will be a tantalising lead up to the music industry’s night of nights – the 2010 ARIA Awards (broadcast on Network Ten at 8.30pm on Sunday, 7 November).

Against a stunning backdrop at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney, winners in the first three ARIA Awards genre categories were announced in style at the iTunes Live: ARIA Awards Concert Series 2010. With multiple ARIA Award nominee, John Butler, headlining the event (with special guest Dan Sultan), the three first categories to be awarded were BEST WORLD MUSIC ALBUM, BEST MUSIC DVD and the brand new peer voted category BEST HARD ROCK / HEAVY METAL ALBUM.

Taking out the inaugural award in the brand new category of BEST HARD ROCK / HEAVY METAL ALBUM is Byron Bay’s PARKWAY DRIVE with their third album Deep Blue. After two well received albums, 2004’s Killing With A Smile and 2007’s Horizons (the latter achieving Top 6 ARIA Album Chart success), 2009’s Parkway Drive: The DVD was met with a typically rabid response. It debuted at 2 on the ARIA Music DVD Chart and achieved Platinum status within weeks. By year’s end it was Australia’s biggest selling local artist DVD and was crowned ‘Best Music DVD’ at the 2009 Rolling Stone Awards. Their third album Deep Blue debuted at No 2 on the ARIA Album Chart and has cemented their reputation as one of the most dominant exponents of heavy music on the planet.

World music supergroup DJAN DJAN have taken out the ARIA Award in the category of BEST WORLD MUSIC ALBUM for their self-titled album. Band members MAMADOU DIABATE, BOBBY SINGH AND JEFF LANG are well known and well regarded for their individual output and careers. DJAN DJAN is a collaboration that has seen these musicians stretching their imagination and skills into sublime areas of new musicality. Although the players show their respects to their cultural backgrounds of Africa, India and Australia, the
album has seen these virtuosic instrumentalists dispense intoxicating music - steeped in tradition, yet brimming with innovation.

The award for BEST MUSIC DVD has gone to the SOUND RELIEF DVD. The DVD of the twin concerts, which were held in Sydney and Melbourne on 14 March, 2009 to raise money for the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal and The Premier's Disaster Relief Fund Appeal in QLD to aid the victims of the Queensland floods, featured a stellar lineup
of leading International and domestic chart-toppers. With once in a lifetime moments living long in the memories of those that attended, the SOUND RELIEF DVD has proven to be a hit with the ARIA voting academy.

ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) proudly congratulates the winners in the first three ARIA Award genre categories.

Tuesday, 2 November will see the announcement of three further ARIA Awards in the genre categories of BEST BLUES & ROOTS ALBUM, BEST CHILDREN’S ALBUM and BEST ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK/CAST/SHOW ALBUM. Watch this space!

Final release production hold tickets are on sale now for the 2010 ARIA Awards on Sunday, 7 November and a reminder for all general public ticket holders to wear all white on the big night!

The 2010 ARIA Awards is a FremantleMedia Australia production for the Australian Recording Industry Association.
