Thanks to Karen Lindsay for the following review...
Country music superstar, Carrie Underwood, took to the stage last Saturday to a near full capacity Brisbane Convention Centre. This being Underwood's first concert tour outside North America, she returns to Australia after a short promo trip in 2011. Underwood was supported by Australian Idol's Damien Leith, who easily succeeded in revving up the all ages demographic for what was gearing up to be a fantastic night of entertainment. Leith, winner of Australian Idol in 2006, was very interactive and captivated the audience with his beautiful heartfelt songs comprising covers and originals. Standout songs of the night included fan favourite 'Beautiful', which found worldwide fame by its inclusion on the global ad campaign for perfume power giant, Estee Lauder and the equally beautiful Hallelujah.
Underwood took to the stage with her 8 piece band instantly captivating the audience with her catchy country tones. Belting out such songs as 'Temporary Home', and 'Good Girl', the show highlighted her strength as a live performing artist. She cites Randy Travis as her idol, eventually getting to meet the star and recording one of his hits 'I Told You So'. The audience seemed to enjoy hearing the stories behind the songs and Underwood prides herself on writing about life experience and the people that are close to her heart. Before performing 'Jesus Take the Wheel' she informed the crowd how excited she was to hear this song on radio for the first time.
A highlight of the show was a stripped back, sit down set at the foot of the stage with her musicians. Five time Grammy Award winning Underwood, who has found fame as one of the most successful debuting female artists in history is here to promote her fourth album 'Blown Away'. She certainly didn't disappoint, with the crowd happily clapping along to her tunes.
Towards the end of the 1 hour 40 minute set, it was a nice touch to see an element of Australia with the inclusion of the INXS classic 'Never Tear Us Apart'.
Carrie Underwood has come a long way since winning the 2005 season of the US hit TV show, American Idol and certainly holds her own. She has gone on to sell 14 million albums worldwide with just as many number one hits. A true storyteller and entertainer, a constant touring schedule will see this young performer around for many years to come.
