2014 Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition Finalists Announced!

3,400 entries | 1,949 songwriters | 17 separate countries

APRA AMCOS, Alberts and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia (NRMTA) are pleased to announce the 50 finalists in the 2014 Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition – the largest charity songwriting competition in the world.

This year’s judging panel is the competition’s largest yet and includes songwriters, Australian and international industry professionals and some of Australia’s most respected journalists and commentators. See below for a full list of judges.

The judges have been blown away by the calibre of this year’s entries. They have managed to narrow the field from 3,400 song submissions down to just 50 finalists. These finalists are now in the running for the incredible AU$50,000 first prize courtesy of APRA AMCOS and Alberts, a second prize of AU$10,000 thanks to AMPAL while third place will receive AU$5,000, thanks to AEG Ogden.

An additional Encouragement Award comprising a cash prize of AU$2,000 was graciously donated by last year’s winners, The Preatures. APRA AMCOS has also donated a production and A&R feedback package with last year’s second prizewinner, Robert Conley, as part of the Encouragement Award.

Each of the four winning songwriters will also receive a copy of the recently released Vanda and Young – The Official Songbook, thanks to Music Sales.

This year’s 3,400 entries came from 1,849 songwriters from 17 different countries.

This year’s stellar list of finalists also includes three former APRA Professional Development Award winners – Georgi Kay, Husky and Morgan Evans, as well as an entry from triple j’s recently announced Unearthed Artist of the Year, Meg Mac. Also on the finalist list is APRA’s 2014 Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year, Louis Schoorl.

For a full list of the 50 finalists, please see below.

The Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition is one of the world’s most prestigious songwriting competitions, supporting talented songwriters whilst raising much-needed funds for music therapy. This music therapy works to help people with developmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Rett Syndrome and Angelman Syndrome and disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Dyspraxia and Spina Bifida.

The competition is open to songwriters worldwide with each applicant paying an entry fee of AU$50.00 per submission. Money raised goes directly to supporting Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia. To date, the Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition has raised close to half a million dollars for NRMTA over the past three competitions.

The winner of the 2014 Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition will join the illustrious company of past Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition winners – Megan Washington (2009), Kimbra (2011) and The Preatures (2013).

Jenny Morris, Chair of APRA AMCOS said today “It seems such an easy way to raise funds … just charge $50 per entry per song. Until you factor in the talent component. This competition attracts the best of the best from around the globe. It took that talent plus time and effort on the part of the songwriters to produce this incredible mélange of music. Again the music industry shows its heart and again the less fortunate among us will benefit.”
