It was one peculiar Friday evening. It was the second time within a week that Sydney was brutally showered with pouring rain and strong wind. Within minutes, the rain had become a major traffic hazard. My car was well under 10km/hr on a freeway and it was annoying; especially when I had to meet a deadline to attend John Legend’s show at Qantas Credit Union Arena, formally known as Sydney Entertainment Centre.
Predominantly a photographer with the occasional jab at reviewing a gig on request, I was smiling for one very good reason. This time I was reviewing the show only and with no responsibility to take photos, I was glad that I didn’t have to risk my gear getting wet. For the first time this year, I was on business without my camera.
John Legend has always been highly respected as a musician and as a performer on stage; maybe not so much for his acting skills. His excellent musicianship has already won him 9 Grammy awards and tons of accolades and a massive fan following. This Ohio born singer/songwriter had already won a Starlight award from the Songwriter’s Hall Of Fame in 2007 way before he turned 30.
In an era of the fast-paced-easy-money-milking by artists by making mediocre songs followed up by shameless music videos and controversies that are well below the product of a person with an IQ below 20, John Legend is quite a different star.
He is one of the handful of musicians today who can dare to stand his ground and continue the tradition of excellent song writing and share them in his own voice; a voice suited to the great halls of kings and angels. John’s songs, personality, voice, music and performance are top class. His performance tonight was no different. I knew what to expect from him and I came back with much more. Already a legend among music lovers at a young age, John Legend is someone I keep high on my ‘watch-list’; a singer/songwriter whose legacy seems destined to live alongside some of the greatest singer/songwriters that we’ve seen.
I was also impressed by the performance of Australia’s own Dami Im, the singing powerhouse who had won The X Factor in 2013. She was charismatic and her voice was beautiful.
