It was my first time seeing Icehouse and also my first time attending a concert at The Cube in Campbelltown. It was also the first time Icehouse had ever played in the area. As a long time fan, I was extremely excited and couldn’t wait for the night to begin.
Firstly, the venue; I was impressed with the set-up of The Cube and how its design actually caters for bands. It was good to be in a setting that was classy and designed for live sound.
Now, onto Icehouse. WOW!!! I was blown away by the musicianship, the music and the man, Iva Davies himself, whom age has not wearied, nor has it affected his ability to not only put on a great show, but also give me Goosebumps with just how good his voice sounded, even at 57.
The night kicked off with ‘Icehouse’ then went into the classic ‘We Can Get Together’ and the hits kept coming and coming. ‘Electric Blue’ brought people to their feet, dancing and clapping along to every beat.
The night then went ‘Crazy’, followed soon by classics ‘Great Southern Land’ and ‘Hey Little Girl’.
One of the highlights of the night was Michael Paynter, currently on the Voice, who was performing on keys, guitars and backing vocals. He was invited up to the front to perform the classic ‘Man of Colours’. His vocals brought tears to the eyes of every female in the room, while Iva accompanied him on the oboe.
The night was filled with thunderous drums, screaming guitars, sexy saxophones, synthesized keyboards and a soundtrack that folks from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s grew up with. It was truly an enjoyable evening and one I’ll remember for a long time.
