Acclaimed Singer Songwriter PAUL WOSEEN [THE SCREAMING JETS] Continues his BOMBIDO Solo Album Tour in 2015

After a massive 2014 touring with both The Screaming Jets and launching his debut solo album, revered singer songwriter Paul Woseen is hitting the road again in 2015 to share music from his recent release with music fans. He has penned songs that have become part of the nation’s psyche over the past two decades and it’s evident that this talented artist is definitely not slowing down. Hot off the heels of touring with The Screaming Jets as part of their 25th anniversary tour, Paul is now getting back to his roots, packing up his guitar and performing tracks from his acclaimed career in an intimate acoustic style.

Creating hit tracks such as Helping Hand and October Grey, Paul is easily recognised by his sweet basslines and his incredible harmonies. In late 2013 Paul released his debut solo album Bombido, a selection of stellar acoustic tracks, some new material and some beautiful haunting versions of his well-known classics from The Screaming Jets. The acoustic long-player that not only features a couple of new tracks that aptly demonstrate Paul Woseen’s talent as a songwriter, but also some classic reworked versions of The Screaming Jets’ songs penned by Paul and given a new interpretation for this album. The 11-track record features some really beautiful interpretations of Jets’ classics, such as the 1994 APRA Song of the Year nominee Helping Hand, and fan favourites Friend of Mine and October Grey. There are also some stunning new tracks, such as Last Dream Falls and Live to Ride, which were hand-picked from a swag of new songs Paul has been writing over the past 12-months.

Picking songs from his extensive back catalogue, Paul went through a process of elimination, trying to figure out what songs fit. Trying to find out which Jets’ songs fitted his vocal style was an interesting process, especially after singer Dave [Gleeson] had made them his own. “I sat down, played them and sang them, and which ones didn’t sound like s**t in my head, I picked,” he says. “I have only sung them once or twice, and I don’t sing like Dave [Gleeson], so the melody is virtually the same with slightly different phrasing and a couple of different words. It is an acoustic album, it was just me, a microphone for my voice and two microphones on my guitar.”

Taking the album out of the road, Paul really wanted that to imitate the intimate experience of the album, just a raw acoustic offering that gave audiences a real insight into the songs. “I’m going to approach the shows like I pitch songs to the band, a little rave about it… two, three, four and I’m in…. try and sing my nuts off and hopefully be as open and honest as I can. I’m always curious to hear the original spin of a song, and I’m sure others are too.”

Paul is the first to admit that performing to Australian audiences is a fantastic experience and one he is really looking forward to with these special run of shows. “I think the best thing about an Australian audience and music lover is that they don’t accept s**t,” he says. “Growing up playing in Newcastle bands, if you weren’t very good the audience would tell you. They are quite discerning, they are also quite open minded. If they like you, if they’re into you, they are a fan for life.”

Despite this being an acoustic tour, it by no way means that the shows are a laid-back affair. Paul channels that full rock persona he is well-known for when he takes to the stage, and plays the same as he would in a band environment. “When I am in the song, I can hear the other guys anyway, in my head,” he says. “I can hear that going on and I am playing like that. It is not a laid back acoustic experience, I am standing up there sweating, smashing the s**t out of the guitar, thinking I’ve got the band behind me.”

Paul was one of the founding members of The Screaming Jets, starting the iconic rock band alongside fellow Newcastle musicians in the 1990s. To this day, Paul and lead singer Dave Gleeson have both been part of the band since its inception, starting out playing battle of the bands in the New South Wales coastal town. Fast forward a quarter of a century, and Paul has penned 30 songs across the six The Screaming Jets albums, three of which peaked in the Top 5 of the ARIA Album Charts. Paul is currently working on more material for a forthcoming album with The Screaming Jets and a second solo offering.

Don’t miss these special run of shows celebrating Bombido, as Paul Woseen shares his songs ‘in the raw’.
